2014 RACE CANCELLED: FULL REFUNDS TO BE ISSUED

When we began the race in 2011, the fees for usage of Waban Park were $200 per day. This was high (in comparison the rental fee for Central Park in NYC is $25). As we were the only ones using the park, the Parks Department decided to raise the fee in 2012 to $500/day. In 2013 they raised the fee to $1000/day. Finally, when we complained that we had had enough, and asked the Board of Selectmen to intervene, the fees were increased to $1250/day.

IWhen we attended the Parks Department meetings, we routinely found they would waive the fees for friends, acquantances, or anyone other than Odyssey TriSport. In other words, they imparted the fee unilaterally for our race, both unethical and probably illegal.

IGiven that our race brough a quarter of a million dollars annually to the island in revenue for businesses, which translates into tax benefits to the town, and that we donated all of the profits to local island charities, we felt the town should share in the responsibility for helping the race develop. Levying incredible fees, in our view, was not a show of such sharing. The town did not respond to further requests to negotiate, leading to the cancellation.

We do not intend to pursue the race on the island in the future, although we may find another off island location to continue the tradition of Vineyard Warrior in 2015. BBy in large, the race has received immensely positive feedback. Its family friendly atmosphere, safety, and beauty were unrivaled. The value to the racer was unmatched compared to many of todays skimpy triathlons. Some locations are just not worthy of such attention.

While the Oak Bluffs Selectmen and Parks Department were reliably contradictory and unhelpful, many of the towns residents and local businesses did support the race. Their support has been much appreciated. The Police Departments were always dependable, as were the EMS and Harbormaster.

Thank you for your support of Vineyard Warrior. We know that the triathlon world will not be the same without our race.

The event is limited to the first 800 registered participants.  Please register early as we anticipate a sold out event.  Make hotel registrations early as Martha’s Vineyard has limited lodging.
